I heard a few 1973-S dollars were struck on a copper-nickel clad planchet instead of the intended silver-copper clad planchet. I am a coin neophyte and don't know much about coins. Just a little. Can someone explain to me if this mint set I have if there's a chance the IKE dollar here could be a copper-nickel clad planchet? I can't see the reeded edge, as the coin is in the plastic container.

    AND what's the current market value for these? The 1969 S mint set and the 1973 S set? P1060558.jpg P1060561.jpg P1060564.jpg P1060567.jpg P1060573.jpg

Thank you! I sure do appreciate it! Me love coins!!!!:hail:

I'm not an Ike collector, but I'll give it a try...then let the more knowledgeable Ike Collectors correct me.

Your sets are Proof sets, not Mint sets. Although they're issued by the US Mint, the designation "proof" or "mint" refers to the finish (and content) of the sets.

Value? ...between $8 - $12. The prices are low due to the large number sold. However, many of the sets have been broken up and their prices will likely rise 20-30 years from now.

The 1973s Proof Ike was minted (as you say) in both Copper-Nickel clad (2,760,399) and Silver clad (1,013,646) varieties. I know they released these in sets and as individual coins ("Brown Ikes", I believe). Since the Red Book mintage for the 1973 Proof sets is the same as the mintage listed for the Copper-Nickel clad Ikes...my "guess" is that's what you have.

Normally, one would take a piece of kleenex type tissue and cover the coin with a single layer. If a coin size white area is seen, it is silver or if a dark area or outline is seen it is other than silver. This works best when a coin is outside of flips, plastic covwers, etc., so since this coin is in a plastic box, it might not test for silver, but best way without being able to see the edge.

    no

They did, however sell 40% silver Ike dollars. They come seperately in a brown box and come in a plastic case that says 40% silver Eisenhower Dollar
