1969 penny in really good condition

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by PinchApenny1982, May 19, 2017.

  1. I have a 63 and a few 70's & 80's lincoln coins in this type or better conditions. Are these coins worth having get graded for rarity. Any feedback will help.

Although your coin is in really good condition, If it were to grade at MS-65 the
Red Book only values it at 70¢. To the right person you may be able to sell it for $5.00. IMO, I don't think you would be able to recover the investment of having it sent in to be graded. After all 1,136,910,000 were made.

What you need to understand is that a coin must benefit from grading in a way that's at least equal or greater than the cost of submitting it. This could be anything from achievable price, to liquidity, to independently verified authenticity, and everything in between, but the fact is relatively few coins overall meet the requirements. A coin is what it is either inside or or outside of a slab, and there are countless perfectly fine and collectible coins that simply do not warrant submitting. Yours fall into the latter category.

As for "rarity", even if this doesn't directly impact your coins, it is wise to understand that original mintage is nowhere near as import as survival. A coin with a high original mintage yet few survivors can be more "rare" or "scarce" than one with a lower original mintage and many survivors.
