My daughter brought me a 1969 Kennedy "D" that has no copper on the edge. It has a flat silver finish and it has a different sound than the 1972 that it was compared to. Silver was only made in 1964, right? Any help would be appreciated. The two images of the rim(s) are terrible (there's no macro setting on the digital camera) but you can see the difference. I used my scanner for the full image.
Kennedy halves were only made of 90% silver in 1964. They were made of 40% silver until 1970. That is why it sounds different than the clad 1972 you are comparing it against. Your half is worth about $1-$2.
mostly, I agree. Your 69 should appear "silver" since they were a 20.9/79.1 silver/copper inner portion inside of a 80/20 silver/copper outer layer. Since both inner and outer layers are silver alloys the color change is minimal (read unnoticable). The net of the 2 alloys is 40% silver and has a value of about 90¢ to $1 unless it is MS65 or better (in which case it will be more valuable).
