If the appearance doesn't tip you off you could determine whether it is gold just by picking it up or by measuring it weights. Gold is very dense metal (only platinum is more denser) for example a US quarter sized 22k gold coin will typically weight well over 1/4 oz ( compared to .18 oz for US quarter)
