I decided to submit/send my 1969-(D)enver Jeff-into (S.E.G.S). Hopefully, I'll get a 4+ Count on the step-area, using their quarterly step method. This grading service is the only out there that would even consider doing that on their Certified holders. Alot of collectors don't see this grading service worth fooling with. In my opinion, I've seen a few certified slabs to know,(as far as them recognizing the steps) its' right on, most of the time. This coin does not have a full completed step-area, however, I feel even with this rare & difficult date I can't go wrong if I can get this certified with its step count. Just (1) out of (10,000) coins make a Completed Five Full Step! What makes this so awesome is the fact it will still be considered a very rare coin. (B.Nagengast) with even Half the steps showing. Being Realistic, I'll never find/or get one in a Complete FS! This is as good as its' gonna get. Now, When I get this back from (S.E.G.S.) I'll add a couple photos of it here. In the meantime, here's a couple I can show you. By the way, your welcome to visit my Registry Collection of Jefferson Nickels, read my Bio & Journals, I think you will enjoy the stories. = Type in, Ngc Registry/nickels/1938 to date, circulated series, look for jb4gpo/Jim's Jeffersons' > Enjoy!
Before you begin looking at your 1969-D nickels, that may have steps? You need to ask yourself, DO I FEEL LUCKY ? COULD THIS BE THE DAY THAT I MAY NEVER FORGET, FINDING ONE APPROACHING CLOSE TO A FULL STEP FOR THIS DATE ? >>> WELL, ALL I CAN SAY IS "GOOD LUCK"!
It is a nice nickel, and I understand full steps are hard to come by with this year. However, I have to question why you would think that partial steps like that would make it any more valuable. I mean, it either has full steps or it doesn't. I don't know that the grey area in between would add any value, let alone in a SEGS holder. NGC has moved into the 'grey' are as it is, by awarding 5, 5.5, or 6 steps. Where will it end? 1 full step? (which your exhibits). So, as much as I like your nickel, me being a Jefferson collector, would add no value to it for showing half steps.
Hello gbroke, Well, for one thing, this Jefferson date is actually the "Rarest, in a Full Step Coin." in this Series, anyways. That being said, There's only (1) in a (10,000) shot of actually finding one of these in a Completed Five Full Step! If you ever get the chance, look on E-bay, someone out there may have Bernard Nagengast 2nd Edition booklet for Sale. I'd surely recommend you buying that! He even said in this book it's considered very rare even with (Half the Steps Showing!) It may be a few years old, but its the Best Reference Book>right alongside of "Q. David Bowers, RED BOOK OF BUFFALO & JEFFERSON NICKELS. These (2) books are The Best References For Jefferson Nickels. I've Re-read Both of these several times over, always enjoy what these Master Experts say about Felixs' Jeffersons. You simply can't go wrong buying these... Good Luck! I ran across this thread some 5 years after its writing, and took an immediate interest because I once had a 4.75 step '69-D with ultra clean steps in an ANACS old white MS65 holder. I sold that coin off-line to an eBayer (from OK, I believe) who contacted me with a lowball offer . . . . we eventually transacted at $175 which, at that time I felt was too cheap. That coin was awesome, and I'll probably never see the likes of it again.
