I received this penny in my change today. First thing to catch my attention is the nice condition that it is in for a penny over 50 years old. Taking a closer look, looks like there is another shape of something under the mint mark. Would that perhaps be a chip of some type. Also near the 8 is something else like a chip. It’s raised. Just curious is these are anything special or not.
I get a bunch of BU cents from the 60s in my change. They are worth like 30 ¢ but I like to keep them whenever I find them. Also, old nickels I keep and any dimes from the 80s.
The bump near the date looks to be die gouge, a dent or scratch on the die will leave a raised line or bump on the coins it strikes. It is the same with die chips but come from a different cause. They do not really add any value to your coin. The 68-s used to be a difficult coin to find 30 years ago, it seems as thou they were all hoarded up in collections. They are found in change now, and in Almost Uncirculated condition.
I still find S cents '68 - '74[?] , and they do always seem to be AU. Never understood why ........................
