Hi everyone. I need some help. I'm new to error pennies, (so much to learn!) and came across this one in a collection I just acquired. It's pretty obvious to me, but I'd get some experts to confirm my opinion. Is this a Double Die? If so, does anyone know it's worth? I saw one that looked just like it on eBay selling for $940..... Any advise and info is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks! K
Yea @Dave363 nailed it. Classic case of machine doubling. M.D was really bad around that time. One of the best indicators is the mint mark shows the same doubling. This would not be the case on a true doubled die. The mint mark was hand punched on the die after it was hubbed.
I don't know anything about doubled dies but that is a nice pretty penny. Congrats on your find! Nice job taking the photos as well.
Thanks, but I should've been clear. I don't know how to spot a doubled die lol...that is, until I actually find one and be right about it.
Not bad looking for a 50-year-old cent, though, and the doubling is kinda neat (even if it's not the valuable kind).
