1968 S Kennedy 11.246g

  1. I found this 1968 S Kennedy in a proof set. Weighs 11.246g and you can see a copper core. I’ve tried to do some research on it but I can’t find anything similar. Any ideas?

Its within tolerance might be a little over weight the copper coated edge is normal on them after 1964 when they were %40 silver and %60 copper from 1965-1970.

  4. I have a few other 1968 S Kennedy’s from proof sets that weigh 11.4-11.5 and there’s no visible copper core. So I just thought maybe this one was abnormal. Thanks for the feed back @potty dollar 1878

It is within tolerance. Also how well a copper core shows is variable.

As the above chart shows, anything between 11.10-11.90g is within tolerance limits. On some of my 40% JFK Halves I can see the copper core and some I can't. I'm sure there's an explanation, and if someone knows why, I'd appreciate the answer. Thank you.

The 40% silver coins use outer clad layers that are 80% silver and 20% copper. The core is 21% silver and 79% copper (not 100% copper). Depending on the environmental exposure the core can blend in with the outer layers or even appear slightly darker.
