    Hi All~

I have found a 1968 silver dime with no mint mark "S". I find dimes every week, but always before 1964. When I found this one, I was surprised. I have been reading many forums, and they are stating this is a mistake coin. All silver dimes after 1964 should have a "S" mint mark. I would love some feed back on this. Thanks in advance.

    Ok...I can't resist.

Why do you think it's silver?

The coin you have is a normal 1968 dime. By 1968, they were made of nickel-clad, not silver. This is a normal business strike coin, normal business strikes without a mint mark were minted in Philadelphia. The rare no mint mark coin is the 1968 no-S proof. This coin is not a proof.

Thanks for the feed back. I have been collecting dimes and halves for quite some time. I am positive it is a Silver coin. I tried uploading another picture, too big. I have other 1968 dimes that are clad, and there is clearly a difference. I am confused. I am not trolling, I would like more info if you have time. Thanks.

Wish I could explain this better. I go through boxed of dimes every week, see many clad dimes after 1964. I have never seen a post 1964 dime Silver without a mint mark. Should I take it to a local dealer?

Yes they did, they started Mint marks again in 1968. I have two 1968 dimes side by side, one is clad, and one is clearly silver with no mint mark. I will take new pictures and upload them again. Any suggestions for the pictures to get some clarification?

awesome idea. So the pre 64 dime should weigh the same as the Dime that I have posted. I will do that shortly. Will tell you the exact grams. Thanks.

I am getting pretty tired of the same people on this forum borderline harassing people about being trolls or whatever. You've pretty much succeeded in getting Drago the Wolf to stop contributing/participating in the paper money forum. Now you're doing the same thing with a new member who may well have legitimate questions. There is a thread somewhere on this forum about more experienced members' attitudes toward new members/collectors, I suggest reading it.

That is correct, they started mint marks again in 1968. However, Philadelphia minted dimes did not have a mint mark until 1980. So, any non-proof dime from 1968-1979 without a mint mark was minted in Philadelphia.

The only new (sometimes old) members that that is done to are those
members that come here with their "miraculous" finds, then argue
with the pros that they are sure that the pros are wrong, never providing
anything more than their "opinion", and no concrete evidence, that those
pros are wrong. They come in, stir up the pot, then disappear. They can
    be spotted a mile away.

I'd bet a roll of silver dimes that aint silver, just doesn't have the copper showing on the edge because the nickel outer layer got folded over it... very common.

Weight of silver dimes: 2.50 grams
Weight of clad dimes: 2.27 grams

Make sure you use a balance that goes to at least 2 decimal places.

If you don't have a balance available, you can use a common trick of balancing the coin against a coin of known weight on a pencil or something, in this case your dime with a clad dime. People sometimes do this to check the weight of 1982 pennies.
