1968 d penny

    Is the raised looking metal on the #8 some error or just damage ? I have taken the best possible pictures with my phone thanks

    Looks like the coin suffered some hard contact on top of the 6 and NW corner of the 8 - the metal from the 8 was pushed diagonally to the center, leaving a raised mass - I'm not an expert, but it does look like some sort of post mint damage.

    :pompous:The impression I get is similar in that I think the piece that’s missing on the 6 somehow got transferred into the 8???

    Perhaps both digits just got smashed by some object in those areas. The southeast part of the "8" was also damaged so that it partially covered the lower loop.

    possibly caught in a counting machine,
    but in any case, it's a damaged/sliced digit.

    PMD, as numerous posts have said.
