Hey all, I was searching some penny rolls and discoved an oddity. Now I'm sure some of you have searched penny rolls time to time. Well I know that most 196_ whatever pennies are dull in color and they generally look old. The specific 1968 D penny that I found looks like it just rolled out of the bag. So now I am clueless and hopeful I can get some answers from you guys. Thanks in advance.:desk:
my guess is, it just wasn't circulated much in its life. someone in 1968 could have got it in change from a fresh roll, then tossed it into his change bucket. now he has either passed on and all his change was rolled up and taken to the bank, or he rolled it and went to vegas! could be anything, people save change for years. my great grandmother was well off enough in life that she never had to count change and tossed all her change into a jug since she was in her early 20s. she passed away in 1993 and would have been 92 if she were still alive today. i would have loved to see all that fresh old change, but years ago my grandmothers house got robbed. they made it out with all the change! she estimated a few grand in face value, but who knows what was lurking in there... one other thing, the coin probably wasn't rolled very long to still have the luster it does.
Hi, It's really not that odd after you've been roll searching for awhile Lightly circulated cents with good luster turn up all the time. Thanks, Bill
I just opened a roll of cents that I put away in 1987, and the coins in the middle were as lustrous as they were back in 1987. The coins on the ends had toned a bit, but they still had luster as well
Whenever I go through a box, I usually find four or five copper cents with a nice luster like that. I keep them in a separate tube.
Just came across one in an airtite..the color is like shiny beige. I was thinking maybe zinc, but it is not quite the right color. Thoughts anyone? The coin looks like very brand new. 68d
It can happen. About 2 years ago, when I was picking up pizza, I looked through the coins the cashier had just given me. There was a mint perfect 1968D. I asked if she had any more? She did and I purchased the remaining 47 (2 escaped before I got there). I am guessing someone (and that must be a story in itself) turned it in to the bank and then the pizza place got it for change in the register.
