    Hi All,

I just won a 1967 Special Mint Set for 7$ :hail: which I think is a good price, my first USA set.
after some research I found out that SMS sets were issued in 1965, 1966 and 1967 only.

my question is: is there a reference which will show the different styles of sets?

You should look into purchasing "The Official Red Book of United States Coins". Page 342 provides you with information regarding SMS's. This book is a must-have for any collector of US coinage! :thumb:

$7 is a $1 under graysheet, so depending on your shipping cost you did pretty good.

By different styles, I assume that you want to know how they were packaged by the Mint.

The '65 came in a cello-pak enclosed in a white envelope; the '66 & '67 came in a plastic case in a cardboard container.

I got a '67 SMS, for $5, but after I got it, it turned to be a bad egg of a SMS, very unattractive half. Oh well. At least I got one.

I also got a '65 for $4, and the half turned to be MS with cameo. I was very happy with that.

I am not a collector of USA coins, I just have this one set :D , I might get one as my American collection grows in the future.

and please do not talk about shipping, it costs a fortune to get any thing from USA to my country, I bought different sets for around 40$, shipping will cost 50$ maybe more, so I ignore the shipping part :D.

by different types I mean 65, 66, 67 were SMS, 1964 had the 90% Kennedy half, 68 - xx was in an envelope, xx to xx was in a black cardboard box, then you had the clad and silver sets etc etc.

Wow, I'm impressed that you like US coins enough to put up with such high shipping costs! That's really cool! Do you know the story behind these "Special Mint Sets" that were made during these years and why there were no proof coins or coins with mint marks from any of the branch mints (S and D) made throughout these 3 yrs? It's an interesting story of intrigue and erroneous assumptions made against the coin collecting public and in fact a bill was presented to congress to make coin collecting itself illegal!

The key to SMS set is Cameo. if your SMS coins are grade as Cameo or Deep Cameo that were a $5.00 coin goes to $75.00++ coin

    There are at least one
A guide book of modern United States proof coin sets:
silver and clad sets, 1936 to date

    costs about $14

I'm planning on having my SMS sets graded, but I also want to keep the half raw. So can the grading companies see a difference between the raw SMS coin and the coins in the set?

You could probably cut the Kennedy out of the '65 cello-pak and open the Capital holders for the '66 & '67 to remove the Kennedys. The plastic cases open pretty easily. Then submit the partial sets for grading.

I don't know which TPG you will be using, but you might want to call them to ask, first.

This is exactly what I have been looking for :thumb: , Thanks a lot :)

    DW-coins:
Actually there were 13 sets from Israel and a single American set .. and I will have to pay that much shipping for sets from any country because e-bay "IS" the only source for proof sets for me, people do not care about them that much around here, and although UK is 4000 miles closer than USA to me, shipping from USA is usually cheaper.

    jello:
From the picture it does not look like cameo to me, I will post pictures when I receive the set.

When I get the set I will post the pictures, Grading is not cost effective for me, if you guys think it is Cameo I will be happy knowing that I have a cameo 1/2 dollar :D

maybe as you get to know some of the people here, they will be willing to pre-approve some of your purchases for you.

IOW, maybe you can buy from some of the nice dealers here on the forum and have a better idea of what is being sent

The problem is that the postage cost is really high, and for what I collect now "world proof sets", I found that buying from non collectors could be 50% cheaper than buying from coin dealers.

when the time comes to buy some specific US sets I will probably ask here first.

Note: I changed my screen name.

$10 each for the 65 and 66 SMS sets is about normal. If you are looking for a 65 send me a PM maybe we can work something out.
