Are the indentations only on the coin rim? What does the edge of the coin look like?

Post mint damage in my opinion. I would think that the coin was encased in something at some earlier time.

it really does not look like damage but a design. would someone really encase a coin with a date looking like that? how would it have been held in place. inquiring mind always looking to learn

People encase coins for a lot of reasons, regardless of condition or date. Sometimes they are in something like a "lucky penny" holder, where the coin is encased in plastic. I highly doubt that it is mint made, as there is no logical explanation for how it could be made inside the mint.

Looks like it was within a bezel...

Possibly part of a jewelry piece for someone born in the year 1966?
