Hey all, I recently acquired a mini-hoard of Kennedy Halves, I'm finally getting around to checking them out. I've found at least 3 that look like this: I was trying to check the MDDO list (I was told there is one, but I can't seem to find it). Can anyone provide a link to this blind dog? Ever see doubling in this area on a Kennedy? As always, thanks for entertaining my posts! Thanks, JohnT P.S. If you get a chance, check out my post on the doubled ear Lincoln (nobody has posted a response to this as of yet) http://www.cointalk.com/t211975/
There are two varieties listed in the CPG with doubling on the ear....FS-105 & FS-106. Both are SMS coins. Chris
Both of these varieties, 105 & 106, have more than just doubling on the ear. There is also doubling of the profile, eye, hair above the forehead, the designer's initials, IGWT and LIBERTY. FS-105 has gouges within and around the first "6" as a PUP. Chris
I am not sure what you mean by a MDDO list. If you are looking for a list of die varieties, you can find the CONECA Master Listings at: http://www.varietyvista.com/. The doubling on the ear of your 66 Kennedy Half Dollar is MDD (Mechanical Damaged Doubling). Larry Nienaber
My bad, I added one to many D's. I meant a listing of known MDO's, the listing of Master Die Doubled Obverses... like I had with my 64 Proof Kennedy that had doubling, but was a result of the master die being doubled. A different 1966 to consider, I have a few more that are similar: I thought it looked pretty good. And here is another 1966, this looks legit to me: If you think they're legit, let me know... if not, let me know.
The last two look to be classic examples of SD to me. I've no thoughts either way on the first, at least without images of the rest of the coin.
You don’t need any photos of the rest of the coin to determine the doubling on the ear, that the arrow is pointing to, is MDD. The obverse and reverse of your other two halves is also MDD. Larry Nienaber
Yet another coin: A mix of split serifs with some machine doubling? It's a shame this is so banged up.
I agree. Looks to me like strike doubling, and if I'm not mistaken, doesn't a true double die only appear on 1 side of the coin. It's impossible to have a 2 sided, double die coin. I'm almost certain I am correct. If I'm not, someone please correct me....:smile
That just isn't true! Maybe you should take a look at some examples at VAMWorld of DDO's & DDR's on the same coin. It all depends on the die pairing. Chris
BTW, my bad... I should limit myself to one coin per post. The second set of photos were two different coins. The last set of photos was one coin. I'm convinced that the 2nd set of photos is MDD. The last set, I'm not so sure. As for the ear, some of the ear doublings also have some letters with split serifs so I'm examining them a bit further. Methinks I need to break down and get a better microscope/camera. Thanks for the posts all!!!
You would be much better off to stop looking for this stuff so minor you have to have a microscope to see it .Even if you found a doubled die this minor it would not be worth very much and could not be attributed as to what it is. You will enjoy collecting more if you look for the good coins.
John, check that first 1966 for doubling on his profile, IGWT, and parts of LIBERTY. I have three of the 1966 SMS, FS-103, and they all have that same doubling on the inside of the ear. I have to disagree with the others. I don't think it's strike doubling. Chris
I use a microscope because my vision isn't all that good, but it sure has helped me find 50+ business strikes in MS68 from Mint bags. Chris
Sorry to hear about your weak vision , be careful with that microscope or it may impair your vision even more. I have bifocals and they really help me see a lot better.
Thanks for the concern. That's just part of old age, although I don't think 65 is that old. I already wear glasses, but i take them off when using the scope. Chris
There are 37 CONECA listed 1966 DDO’s including Business Strikes and Special Mint Set Kennedy Half Dollars, with 25 of them having doubling on the ear. You will also find a good number of Machine Damaged Doubled (MDD) out there with doubling on the ear...you have found one. Check out the attached photos to see the difference. Also your “yet another coin” is a DDO...but your photos are worthless for attribution. Larry Nienaber
I agree, my digital microscope with a .3mp resolution isn't really cutting the mustard. I'm in deep research mode trying to find something to replace my current setup. Whatever I get, I'm thinking at least 5MP, just not sure if 80x will be sufficient or if I should go with something up to 200x or 400x. I'm also trying to avoid breaking the bank, which doesn't appear to be a likely outcome. Thanks for the pics! I have several (probably ~10 so far) that have varying degrees of ear doubling.
