    Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this hobby and have been taking great joy in it so far. With that said, I know very little even after studying photos and terms.

I finally found something cool last night and was hoping you can either confirm or explain what this is. I believe this could be machine doubling because the "R" has a nice double and it's lower than the rest of the "R". You can see in the pictures.

    1. Is this a real doubled die, machine doubled, or....?
    2. Can a doubled die only be on one letter or small area of a coin or does it have to be the entire coin?

Thank you all. Pictures are attached.

That is MD. You can tell by the flat, step like appearance of the doubling.

    DD would be notched.

Ok. Thanks. So machine doubling gives a step appearance while authentic doublied dies give a distinct imprint with notches. Is a machine doubled considered an error in any way? I heard it could be considered................damage. :(

There are different opinions on MD being an error. Some say it is, some say it isn't.

Here's a diagram to help distinguish between MD and DD:
