Has anyone ever heard of a 1965 quarter that appears to be silver (edge is all silver, not two-toned with copper) only weighing 5.2 grams instead of the normal 6.2 grams for the pre-1965 silver planchet? The scale is calibrated. I've tried researching but haven't found anything. Pictured alone and with 1964 silver quarter. Hoping someone on here has some information. 1965 Quarter Front.jpg 1965 Quarter Back.jpg 1964&1965 Quarter Front.jpg 1964&1965 Quarter Edges.jpg

It has most likely been plated.

Yes, I have heard about them and seen them authenticated and sold. What is the weight of a clad quarter supposed to be?

Fastest way to tell is the sound. Drop it on a ceramic countertop. A 90% silver makes a different sound than a clad.

Or drop it my way ,
Seriously , it has to be plated . Do you own a metal detector ( hobby style ) ? That will register lower than Silver somewhat .

They sound very similar to me, but I also have hearing damage from military service so take that with a grain of salt.

The coin on the right in photo is the coin in question, right?

If it were real, you might not want to handle it like that. Nice manicure, btw.

There's another way to tell Clad from Silver, but I haven't tried it. Apparently, you can tell the difference between Clad and Silver by viewing the coins through a tissue. Seriously, I read about it on CT.
