Hi guys...any info on the value here? Can't find anything online as far as this Holder/Envelope. What's the likelihood of getting a First Strike Designation on a PCGS Holder?
IMO, zero to none but you can always try. You see, post marks, in 1965, could very well have been back dated and as far as I know, the only valid post marks that PCGS will accept are the post marks on original US Mint Shipping containers. First Strike™ must be within 30 days of the initial release and I don't know that this actually qualified. But then, what do I know?
I was hoping that it was from the mint...the '65s weren't released until November so the timeframe makes sense. Was there a dealer that sold them like this?
The only thing that terms like "First Strike" and "First Day of Issue" have in common is that they are useless attributes in numismatics. Chris
I honestly believe that it has a lot to do with numismatics. There are collectors and there is a demand, to the right collector, for the history of the coin over the price the shiny plastic holder gives it. Look at the Formative Years Lincolns and ASE's. Not worth much to most as First Strike or last over the grade(value), but some people do care. True collectors I believe DO care about this type of stuff. I was wondering if I may stumble across a true collector of the sort that cared before I just tear off the envelope and send it off for grade. There has to be a history to this Holder and envelope. Just wondering what it is.
Maybe I'm that collector..this isn't a fancy overpriced opinion in a plastic slab but it's certainly history. Just wondering what it is.
After probably around 1yr of being on here.. it's great to see you're still as insightful as ever Chris
Don,t get sucked in !! by TPG buzz words like "First Strike" "First day of issue" These mean absolutely nothing !! and are used for the sole purpose of charging You more money for the same thing, i have seen this time and time again but For sure do your own research, just my two cents !
He isn't asking about modern bullion, if he could get it (which as mentioned he almost certainly won't) it would mean a lot.
True collectors? True collectors? Give me a break! True collectors would be smart enough not to fall for such tripe. Gee, I didn't know you've been around here for more than a year. Is that how long you've been collecting? Well then, please tell me which 100,000 coins of the 2,000,000 coins or so piled up on the pallets at the Mint loading dock should be the ones that qualify for the "First Strike" designation? Chris
Go over to the US Mint site and find a press release from June 2016. It will give you the true skinny on "first strikes" and other such TPG designations.
I meant it's been a year since posting on here and that you were the one to constantly give me a hassle. It's an honest question and it would be a big deal for a 1965 IMO. Would YOU buy it? Obviously not. I think someone would though. Doesn't matter already pulled it out. And btw, I'm not an expert. I'm asking questions to experts and self proclaimed experts alike. Do YOU specialize in Clad Washington's? That's kinda who I was looking to get an answer from. But instead, I get your input on First Strike Bullion which is complete nonsense to me in many ways. It's BULLION. They should all come out perfect and if not, they're still the same 1oz of silver. I would think it would be a totally different game as far as older coins where First Strike was rarely thrown around. Don't get all bunched up. Your input just didn't really give me any kind of relatable answer and it was an opinion based on modern Silver Eagles.
I was referring to the date you joined CT, April 18, 2016. Constantly giving you a hassle? How many times has that been since, as you said, it has been more than a year since you last posted. Common sense should tell you that no reputable grading service would designate "First Strike" on any coin that was produced more than 50 years ago. Perhaps, before you asked this question, you should have read the requirements on the PCGS website. It doesn't matter if it is a clad quarter or not. You need somebody who is well-versed on the PCGS submission policies, that is, if you don't want to take the time to look it up for yourself. Who in the heck said anything about bullion or Silver Eagles? I sure didn't. I can tell that you're one of those who absolutely refuses to say, "Oops! I goofed!" and move on. I'll say it again! The designations "First Strike" and "First Day of Issue" are meaningless. Chris
You guys are actually wrong on this one giving generic answers based off your own views. A first day issue would be very meaningful on a 1965 quarter.
That's exactly what I'm thinking! The year it all changed from silver to clad. The fact that it wasn't even released until November because of the 1964 demand from the mint. And it wasn't just a marketing tactic used by tpg's considering nobody used them! Entirely different scenario in 1965 to the recent years where PCGS and NGC make a killing on "Early Releases"
