I just opened this roll that's been in my stash for 20 years or so, and most of the coins have weirdness on them. Many have glops of what I had thought was metal, but I got brave and pushed one with my fingernail and it moved, and felt like either grease or wax. Now I wonder how many of my other BU coins with blobs are also like this. Should I start scraping them all? One had a huge blob on Lincoln's beard, and if I remove it, it will be a difference color underneath. In this same batch, I found a nice cud too -- can post photos later.
I've heard people use to add olive oil to their rolls thinking that this would preserve them, but after several years in the oil it turns to a goo. Might want to try a little goo gone or acetone to see if you can get it off.
Not a clue what it is. But if all the coins have stuff like that on them a dip in acetone certainly isn't going to hurt them any worse It'll make them change colors though. You might want to try distilled water first - see if it will dissolve whatever that stuff is. That won't make them change colors. By the way Dot, based on the pic those coins are not BU - even without the gunk.
Well I gave ole Abe a shave, or perhaps it was surgery? Does that make me a coin surgeon? Why do you say they are not BU? Actually I don't know if they were supposed to be or not -- they have been sitting in a box for at least 20 years, just finally got around to looking at them. The roll didn't say they were BU, but when I opened it (it was not a bank roll) and saw how nice and shiny they all were, I sort of just assumed it. I'll have to look at them carefully again. I guess I should have called them AU, that would be more accurate.
I said they were not BU for two reasons - one because of the gunk all over them. Two - because based on the pic you provided it appears that the coin has some wear. It looks like you managed to get that piece of gunk off in one piece - you got any idea what it was yet ?
