1964 sms Kennedy

So I am still skeptical but all the earmarks are there. Dominant dangling 4, heavy die polishing marks, satin finish, salmon orange rim toning.

Die polishing marks from the lower seraph of the f to the a, and through dollar.

 

A straight g with breaks in star rays 11 through 14, and the non accented hair type. Struck like a proof coin.

I'll believe it when one of the grading services says it is an SMS.

 

Here is what PCGS has to say. Note the parts highlighted.

"Furthermore, it is believed these SMS coins came into existence somehow through the involvement of Eva Adams, U.S. Mint Director at the time. After Eva Adams passed away, her estate was sold off and well-recognized dealer and auctioneer Lester Merkin is believed to have bought many of the coins from her estate. Lester Merkin's collection would then be sold in a Stack's auction in the early 1990s, including some, if not all, of the known 1964 SMS coins."

Unless you can trace your coin back to EVA Adams, the Lester Merkin sale, or a mint employee from the 60's, it is incredibly unlikely for you to have one. In addition, I believe all of the 64SMS coins where slabbed by TPGs around the time of the Merkin Sale. It doesn't look like yours is in a slab.

Sorry, nothing about this coin looks proof.........or SMS. The rims are beveled, there are no mirrors in the fields......even SMS Kennedy's have at least some proof like qualities, which include squared rims and mirrors. Yours has none of the above. And the dangling 4 appears on some non SMS Kennedy's. I don't see it on yours anyway.

Note the position from where the drop falls compared to what I believe you are referring to in yours.

On the authentic SMS coins the drop starts near the end of the crosslet. Yours starts not near the end buy beyond the end.



On the reverse the die scratch between the F of OF and A of AMERICA must be an exact match, not close. Yours does have some sort of marking between the letters, but it's curved. Since all SMS halves came from the same die, they must match.

 

I don't use letters to says something. There may be some young people (and old people, like me, that hasn't a clue what SMS is. I look at CT from time to time an the well education collectors abbreviations like SMS and other letters. Is there a requirement to have a degree in English to understand your abbreviations? Just a thought for a 72 year old novice. Thanks to everyone for writing in this blog. I learn a lot, mostly, that I need more education.
