Hello, I found two 1964 silver quarters in a collection of coins I inherited from my dad. The backside on both of them is dull with a matte-like finish while the "heads" side is shiny as one might expect. Attached pics I hope will properly show you what I am in question about. Could the back side of the coins be some sort of an error causing their appearance to be dull? Thanks! Roger
There is no error I'm aware of that would cause a dull appearance on the reverse. The only factor affecting luster on a coin would be the way it was stored.
I read something about an affect in the making of the coins that caused the appearance to be different (sorry for being vague but that's what I recall being the jest of what I read). I thought perhaps that might be the case with these two. Oh well, I have many more to go through! Thanks for the quick response.
Its a 1964 D Lego, is likely correct, probably storage technique at some point, such as witman coin folder ect. the 1964 D had the most coins minted 704 million. basics, its worth the weight in silver .18 oz. I like the look, feel , sound of silver, still cool coins to have.
Looking at the black stuff on the reverse, I'm going to guess it was much worse at one time and someone cleaned it. Thus affecting it's luster. The reverse of quarters have a lot of nooks and crannies in the design and are difficult to clean properly.
What you are seeing on the reverse is toning. Depending on where and how it was stored could cause the toning.
Looks like normal surfaces for a nice frosty 64 Silver quarter. (plus some nice light toning) Most, from BU rolls have great, almost satin, surfaces and nice luster.
