1964 penny toned or environmental damage

Hi good afternoon everyone! I know looks eww just curious why it’s red. Is this environmental damage or just the real toned? I just love the color it’s my fave!

Toning occurs in many different ways. That's just years of circulation toning. Not the type that collectors are searching for.

 

All toning is in a way environmental damage. For sure caused by the environment.

I agree with paddyman, this was acquired during circulation. Nice colour though.
IMO toning and circulation wear give a coin character, they tell a story.

 

It's just turned that color as it's copper and it's been around for 56 years.
