I love the idea that there might be a 1964 peace dollar out there, who knows, althought none of them have ever surfaced who klnows about there lagle status, what do you think a 1964 peace would bring? do you think it would break the record of the 1933 $20.00?
Doug, several of us have suspected you of holding a few of these and NOW it looks like we finally have proof. Hope you can keep at least one step ahead of the feds, possibly into the mountains behind your house. Good-luck and while you are on the run, don't forget your flyrod.
Oh no no no no !! You misunderstand - those things are illegal to own !!! I'd never own one of those I was just posting a picture to make sure THAT'S what he was asking about
I've always been curious about the 1964 Peace Dollar. Did any of them actually make it out of the Mint? I'm under the impression that they were never monetized, so ownership of one would be illegal. Were every one of them accounted for before being melted?
It was over 40 years ago, but I can still remember how excited I was at the prospect of a 1964 Peace dollar. Too bad it never happened.
I don't think so but anything might be true... I know a guy that told me about his friend that has seen 7 or more real 1933 $20 gold pieces...after he saw a few the Feds got them but not all that he saw...so there might be more out there.... Speedy
Absolutely some of them did! There were receipts written for the sale of some of them to employees. The mint weighed all the coins turned in and it matched the weight of the nember of 1964's minted and they were melted. That took care of that, end of story.
They weighed them BUT did they look at the date???....someone could have put a 1922 in and not a 1964.... Speedy
THAT is the whole point. They did not check the dates. The mint was quite embarrassed when this news became public
Thats what I thought....so there COULD be some out there...but I don't guess the odds are very good. Speedy
Well let's put it this way - the odds are certainly not very good that anyone is going to admit to owning any of them. But then there's always that nagging story of the Wyoming hoard
Does anyone have any in-depth article(s) on the 1964 Peace Dollar? If they exist and the Mint acknowledges receipts for them to Mint employees, does that make those particular dollars legal to own? Or, did the Mint recall ALL of the 1964 Peace Dollars, thereby making ALL of them illegal to own? Basically, are they in the same category as the 1933 Double Eagle (except for the Smithsonian specimen and the "legalized" private specimen)? Or, are they in the same category as a 1913 Liberty Nickel? Or, perhaps some of those aluminum 1974 Lincoln cents - no... wait... those are actually legal to own, aren't they? I think I know the answer to my own questions: If you made it known that you possessed a 1964 Peace Dollar, I believe you could expect a knock on your door from the Secret Service... correct?
Well, I actually DO have one....sort of! It's a really nice reproduction, which is 90% silver, same size and weight as the other Peace Dollars. I purchased it several years ago from a Denver area dealer. It looks great, but has the word "copy" engraved on the reverse. It's at the bank or I'd post a pic today.
Another problem with their claim that they accounted for all of them when they destroyed them is that in 1969 when they moved a couple of the presses they found a couple of the planchets. If they accounted for all the coins, silver etc why weren't those planchets noted as missing weight?
