Found the 1964 D nickel (see pic1) in change... Caught my eye. threw it under my scope and trying to figure out if it's a RPM or what? Thoughts? Also, a few pennies I've gotten of late...
Thanks cpm9.... Any thoughts on what it is then? Didn't seem like die wear based on what I've read here, but I'm brand new to looking for this kind of thing. Esp on the cents, I thought RPM made sense.
compare the 53 d with this http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1953&die_id=1953d1mm001&die_state=mds cvompare the 51 d with this http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1951&die_id=1951d1mm002&die_state=lds
I get the nickel and the '60D, but the other two look pretty good to me. I'm no expert so please elaborate as to how you made your decision?
Ziggy, you're probably right because I looked at them too quickly, but I would like to see if Jason could post the die markers. My apologies, Jason! Chris
Here are some more of the 1953 D, closer up. Doesn't have the scratch to the O in IGWT... More coming soon.
Aaaand the 1951 D. I hope these help! Don't seem to have the major markers, but these are all circulated coins.
Circulation wear can obscure the markers, or you could simply have an earlier or later die stage than the one photographed on coppercoins. The attributions for the 53 and 51 are correct. There's a lot of similar ones for the 1960D, but if I had to guess without examining it up close, I'd say that it's probably RPM033. I think I see the split upper serif. http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1960&die_id=1960d1mm033&die_state=lds
Wonderful! Thank you all so much I'll probably hang onto the nickel just because it looks interesting, even if the MM is just wear/deterioration.
The 1953D is an LDS example of RPM001. This is a "Cherry Picker's" variety. LDS specimens do not show the secondary mintmark inside the primary mintmark like earlier die stages do.
When I look at the 53D RPM-001 photo in the CONECA Top 100, it looks like the secondary mint mark outside isn't the same, bottom left. Larry Nienaber
I think this one took a slight hit Larry, but also, the example they show on the top 100 page is an EMDS example. In later die stages, it looks much more like the one the OP posted.
I think you may be right with the mintmark position. I am just having a hard time visualizing how the secondary inter mintmark can be influenced by a later die state without affecting the secondary outer mintmark also. Larry Nienaber
