How many of the 1964 Japanese silver 1000 Yen coins were used in circulation and how long did they stay in circulation?
Meow has not ever see any obsolete coinage come across Meow's paws in Japan. Spending a coin like that in the 1970s to now, would be like buying something with a Morgan or Peace dollar in this day and age. So most likely if one spent it on something, the person who got it won't ever spend it and keep it and it wont circulate any at all. So it highly doubtful that anyone has ever spent one ever since the 1970s. Meow does remember they made a 10,000 yen gold coin in the 1980s. Someone showed one to Meow, but they where not made for spending. Like how they still make $5.00 face value gold coins. It should be able to buy $5 worth of goods, but how foolish that would be. Just a few thought from Meow.
It did circulate very briefly according to a few people that I've talked to. It got hoarded quickly within the first year unlike the 100 yen counterpart - which lasted until 1967 as 100 yen coins were no longer struck in silver.
You can still find plenty of the 1000 yen pieces on eBay or from dealers for about $20 to $25 easily.
