Hello Everyone, I apologize I do not have a photograph but was wondering if anyone on this site could help with a coin I found last night. It is a double headed silver coin marked 1964. The size and portrait are the same as a 1/2 dollar coin. Is it an error? Thanks and have a great day, Donna
Hi Donna, First of all...welcome! This is certainly a novelty coin produced outside the Mint (using pieces from two different coins) and has only novelty value and the value of the silver in the coin, but no numismatic value. Until recently, it was believed that there were no authentic, Mint-issued "two-headed coin" errors. However, in recent years, one coin -- an 1859 Indian head cent -- has been found with two "heads" and has been generally judged as an authentic piece as struck by the Philadelphia Mint. The consensus is that this isn't a true mint "error" because it was most likely deliberately struck by some joker at the mint in 1859. But as a genuine piece as struck at the mint, it still has plenty of numismatic value.
