I personally am almost certain that this is the correct variety, which makes me excited, but I have been wrong before. So I would like if anybody can determine if this coin is actually the XWL variety, and I'll add more pics if it is good. The story: Walking to get a usual 100 $ in coins to CRH, and the bank teller said before I left, Oh, wait! She said she found this coin on the ground. I thanked her, but she refused for me to pay her 5 cents since the exchange, not knowing much about canadian coins i thought it might be silve ( I was wrong) but doing some research I saw the variety and I am positive that this is it! Not in the best of shape though.
If you like it, keep it; value should play no part in it. Grade-wise, you're being far too strict IMO, at least by US standards. As for value, I don't know... to someone who wants it, what's a few bucks. Check completed ebay listings as this should give you a better idea of what it may fetch.
Agree with BooksB4Coins, looks like an Extra Water Line variety to me too (also the 'if you like it keep it'). This guide lists it a bit higher: http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php?coin=5-cents-1964&years=5-cents-1953-2013 This Canadian site selling a VF20 for $20: https://www.jandm.com/script/getitem.asp?CID=3&PID=87
After checking completed ebay listings, I am impressed by what some are willing to pay for such a coin. Thank you.
I had the value question, is it worth keeping value wise? I mean if its worthless then I see no point but if it has some premium.
Let me ask you something... do you search out or acquire coins with the intent of keeping because you like/enjoy them long(er) term, or do it only with the hopes of making a profit? Basically, what is the reason, or reasons, you are involved in this hobby? Please understand that I am not questioning your motives, but am curious as to what they are. As for your question regarding "some premium", please do what I suggested earlier (and later did myself) and check completed ebay listings, or click the links provided by jj00. I realize that you're young, but not too young to take the initiative; you were able to identify the variety, so learning if there is a premium attached to it should be relatively easy.
I do realize the fact you are not questioning my motives. And I do it with a bit of both. I want to make a profit, and enjoy the coin. That's all.
Thank you for the honest answer. There is, of course, nothing wrong with what you want to do, but when collecting, please do not allow desired profits to have a part in it if you like or enjoy owning a coin. With this example, you paid nothing for it, and were clearly excited to have identified the variety, so why not allow this to be the true "value" of the coin? My point is to not allow others to decide the enjoyment you take from your hobby. The coin meant something to you before you had any idea of value, so even if it had turned out there was no added premium for the variety, this should not change.
