I recently bought a lot of half dollars on a buy it know from ebay and this coin was in it. I believe it is mechanical doubling but still neat.
Nice coin fastfun. I've never ran into any double die franklins yet, I'll have to go through my set and see if I have any.
FF-I actually have a whole roll of Unc. Franklins like that, just like that. It's pretty neat Mech. doubling
FF and Co. - There is an article by Ken Potter entitled 1963-D 50c Obverse Doubled Die Reported. The images are fairly convincing. I found one 63-D Franklin in my collection (MS-63) that matches the characteristics exactly. I think the 63-D may be the first Franklin doubled die, and sorry, but I couldn't quite tell looking at the images of FF's nice coin.
That looks like machine doubling....there are some RPM's for that date and other dates in the Franklin Half Dollar set....you can check out CONECA's site for that list... Speedy
Speedy, I must apologize for the ambiguous way I expressed the term "63-D", as it might be easy to confuse the initial images (FF) with the doubled die I referenced - in my personal collection - and Potter's article, etc. I'm new to this site (not to coins), contrary to initial appearances. Thanks for the clarification!
No need to do that.....you are more than likely right---I have collected Franklins halves but never have gotten into the DD's and RPM's of that set so I don't have the least idea on what to look for. Glad to have you on CoinTalk!!...its a great forum! Speedy
