Wow, I got this beauty in my change over the weekend. The Andy Griffith Show was like only half way through its original run when this dollar was made. Great shape for its age.
60 years old and still kicking that strong, definitely a keeper and nice find, also is that some over inking going on.
Thats a Barr note also.... you may find it interesting to google it nice paper quality too back in 63 they used good rag.https://www.google.com/search?q=jos...zLjAuMZgBAKABAbABHg&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-hp Was in office only 28 days L 76800001F. Nice note. looks to be stored for most of its life. Delivered January 1969 through November 1969. page seven. http://www.uspapermoney.info/serials.pdf
My dad was paid at the bank and would bring home straps of $100 singles..my parents budgeted in envelopes to pay everyone ,milk man , insurance man...etc. Dad had saved about 200 Barr * notes thinking his short tenure would make the notes worth more.
Very neat information. Initially all I was excited about was how old it was and the condition that it was in. Learning about the "Barr Note" gives it even more coolness. Thanks.
This is why CT is the go to place for the information you seek....all us old ____ fill in the blank..lol who have either lived though it... or have knowledge that are more than willing to pass on... before we do!
Gosh! I was a sophomore in high school when he signed it. I have a $2 bill that my grandmother gave me when I graduated (barely) from high school in 1965.
Just off the top of my head, I'd say it was saved as a Barr note in excellent condition, and stored until someone found it, had no clue about Barr and just spent it.
That's what I think happens with a lot of the currency I come across in my daily change. I've fount way too much collector stuff in my change for that to be just a coincidence. I've found old dollar bills in books at my relatives houses. They seem to use them as book markers some times and forget about them in the books. I seem to have pretty good luck with quarter changer machines too, getting proof quarters out of them I got three proof quarters in total from quarter change machines. I've often speculated that someone passes and the family members rush in and all go on a full-on treasure hunt through all of the drawers and cabinets of the house. There's always one in the bunch that will gather up all the change and go spend it.
Joseph W. Barr’s name is on that note. Looks like it came out of a collection that was kept for 60 years. Definitely a keeper as it’s worth more than face but you can’t retire on it. Nice find.
The only coins/currency that I'm aware of that you could retire on is those cans of gold coins the CA couple found on their property when they were out taking their dogs for a squirt. How often does that happen?
The dates on bills are not like coins and can often be printed many years after the date shown. In this case since he was only in office for 1 month, it probably is correct. Always liked the Barr notes.
