Just got as a present a 1961 un-opened proof set. I have now opened it and looked through it. Ofcourse all of you know what it contains but my problems start with how to recognize them, I have seen a few 1961 half-dollars for example, priced differently, how can I see what mine is. It is a Philadelphia, PA proof. I am interested in selling these, that's why I am looking for information. Thanks in advance.
What information are you looking for? Are you are looking for the value of the coins based on their grade? Did you remove the coins from the plastic "flat pack" or by "opening" did you just mean removing the flat-pack from the envelope? All proof sets from 1936-1964 were made at the Philadelphia mint. Since 1968, they have all been made at the San Francisco mint.
Thanks for the reply. I am looking for the value yes. Coins have not been removed from the plastic flat pack.
What about the values shown at the PCGS website ( http://www.pcgs.com/prices/ ) there are multiple types of each coin. Some higher priced than others.
Those are for PCGS graded coins. The chances that the coins you have are worth grading are slim. While there is a possibilty that they are very high grade and worth the $30 to get them graded, you have to remember that the PCGS price guide is just a guide and is almost always way to high for the going prices. If you can post pics, there are certainly folks here who can give you an opinion on whether or not to roll the dice on the grading. It is not a game for the faint of heart, it is expensive, and you need to know what you are doing. Otherwise, your set is worth about $12
