1961 One Cent Canadian has silvery color

Discussion in 'World Coins' started by DAVID J SAUNDERS, Jan 28, 2021.

  1. I have hundreds, maybe a thousand, of Canadian one cent coins, but this coinstrikes me. It has a silvery finish on it, and I don't know if this is weather related or what, and I know you guys have the knowledge (or the opinion) to share with me. I don't know what to say about the coin except that I may have got it in a coin roll last year and I didn't even pay attention to it until today.

Why is the rim Brown and the rest that funky color ? Looks plated at one time .

    Most likely plated.
Always weigh it. If it weighs correct it's nothing.
If it is very heavy or very light then more investigation is warranted.
Plating is very light and won't even add 1/10 of a gram in weight.

One obvious error is the date. It's stamped upside and backward.

Bite your tongue @Martha Lynn / It's "struck" not stamped . Stamps are stamped, Coins are struck . ;)

Stamps are printed, so I'll meet you half way.

Looks to be nickel plated. Nothing special.

Would "Coined" be a more appropriate word?

I would also join the plating camp. If you look at gouge dent on N it looks as it indented the plating? I would just keep it for conversation piece " Call it your Canadian Silver Maple"

Just found some interesting reading in my 2019 RedBook glossary.
die- a piece of metal, usually hardened steel, with an incuse reverse image, used for stamping coins.
Planchet- the blank piece of metal on which a coin design is stamped. jik you hadn't seen that in your Redbook....martha

Both of you are right. You can have multiple terminologies for a single process, including "Striking" or "Stamping" a planchet. It's just like the "Cent" VS "Penny" argument.

  14. I'm unsure as to what you mean that it was struck upside and backward? thanks.

He was joking. The date reads the same upside/down as it does backwards.

You asked a question, I answered it. Why the snarky response?

Uh, Bob. I don't think it was meant to be snarky, nor directed at you either. I think it was directed at himself. Like the old "I could a had a v8" ( smack forehead ) kinda thing. Could be wrong, but don't think so. It's all good. Relax my friend.

Hello Martha. Some curmudgeons, like me, have lived through many vocabulary additions and word meaning alterations. I have seen the word 'Duh' used many times and, in most instances, it was in a derogatory context. In the past, I have been accused of having thin skin, so, for the record, I will agree with my accusers. I do have thin skin. It is part of the physical aging process, however, when it comes to feelings, not at all.

    Robert.

Morning Robert. I too have some probs with the way our language seems to be changing. Mostly with the abbreviations they use. And don't get me started on emojies. Emojies remind me of hierogliphics. Also you don't come across as having thin skin either. ...martha . Also I want to thank you for serving our nation . Well done sir....martha
