Hey all, Recently, I've been finding a bunch of 1963B (Barr) $1 notes in circulation. In change, in bank straps, etc. Before this recent surge in these things, it had been years since I had seen a Barr note in the wild. I've come across the occasional old note in circ in recent months, but before this latest Barr note bonanza, the oldest series I had found in a while, was series 1969. So, how about you guys? Especially those that strap search on a regular basis, or who handle a lot of cash. Are notes from the 1960's, and Barr notes in particular, still incredibly common? Because lately, at least based on my finds, they seem to be. Just curious to know what others are finding.
I strap search quite a bit and handle cash all day long and I think I have found 5 notes from the 6o's over the last 5 months. So I wouldn't call them common. To me It always seems like the notes come in waves. You don't see any Barr notes for awhile then you find 2 in one week. I think that goes with all of the harder to find series. I hadn't seen any 1985 notes in along time and Last week I found 2 in the same day. Derek
I've searched thru countless amounts of $1's and I've only found one 1963B Barr JC. I've also found one 1963A LD and 2 1969B's. I very rarely find any $1's from the 1960's and when I do I am more than happy to see them. -tbud
Thanks for the responses, guys. I also always enjoy finding older notes. Pretty much anything before series 1995 is an instant keeper in my book, unless the condition is really bad. Believe me, I'm not complaining about finding so many Barr notes, recently. As far as I'm concerned, keep 'em coming! I just find it interesting. Derek, it's interesting that you mention series 1985's, because a few months back, I went through the same thing with that series, as I am currently, with the 1963B's. I kept finding them all over the place. In one months time, I found two series 1985 $5's, and about 6 or 7 $1's.
i can't speak for everyone else, but i have found these older notes to be somewhat common lately. in the 3 or 4 months i've been searching notes at my bank, i've found 2x1963, 4x1963A, 5x1963B, and a slew of 1969 notes of all series. and that's just singles, as i have a couple 1960's series fives, tens, and twenties as well (have passed on 50's and 100's as of yet). i have talked about this on this forum with other posters in the past, and it seems that those in more rural areas tend to see higher concentrations of older notes. my town has about 2,000 population. it doesn't stop at '60's series either. i have picked up two 1934 $20 notes that were used as cash at McDonalds in the past 3 months. i've passed on several 50's and 100's from the fifties. i have a woman that works at the grocery store, that's trying to get me to buy a 1929 $20 frb note she pulled out of her register one day (i haven't actually seen the note yet, but she says it's a frb note), and another gentleman that got a $20 gold certificate as payment last week at his convenience store. i just found out about that last night, and i'm going to try to get a look at that this morning at the bank. it's strange. these old, old notes just keep popping up. who knows how long some of these old countryfied folks are stuffing cash under their mattresses, preparing for a rainy day? i'm hoping there are a lot of them still out there.
