Is this a lamination error, is it just rot, or is it something else? Thanks everyone!

Looks more like a cracked/defective planchet...

But it basically occurs in the same stage of production, and their often considered one in the same - "defects" and "laminations".

But, typically, when I think of a "lamination", I think of the metal impurities only having affected the coin's surfaces - obverse and reverse, and not including the coin's edge. And as far as a "cracked planchet" goes, I've always assumed that the depth of the defect is a factor.

This defect is relatively deep and has expanded to the edge of the coin.

Whatever you'd like to refer to it as, it's still a genuine mint error... nice find! :thumb:

It looks like a big lamination peel to me. Keep it in a 2X2 so it doesn't peel off.

Retained struck through? Seems like the edge of the "peel" goes all the way around, even on the edge of the coin.

Awesome! I've been having some good luck lately with Coin Roll Hunting! Can anyone throw a ballpark market price for this? Maybe around 20 bucks?

Thanks for all the info and feedback guys!

Maybe in a retail setting. I think a fairer estimate would be $10-$12. :)

So wait, is it a lamination error or cracked planchet?

Lamination peel. It's just carried over onto the collar. That's what I'm seeing.

    It's a subjective question.

Personally, I'd refer to it as a planchet defect or "crack", and I've got a feeling that a TPG would attribute it as having a "defective planchet".
