196 Penny - Error?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Brandon Purdum, Jul 12, 2023.

  1. The "L" in "LIBERTY" is very squished/smooshed against the rim. Error or not? I'm guessing not, but thoughts are welcome

Welcome to CT. What you are seeing is the result of severe die deterioration. The US Mint tried to get as many planchets struck as possible before having to change dies.

Not an error, but it is a direct result of the Master Die being deformed from years of use. That Master Die will only last three more year before being replaced for the 1969 year.

Just an extremely worn die. Not an error by any means.
