Had to do some driving for work on Monday. Went by several antique shops and checked for coins (and bought some of course). One place had 20 uncirculated 1959 British Half Pennies. They were aksing $10. I don't know anything about world coins, so I passed. How much are they worth? I found a picture of a 1965 on the internet. Looks like the same ship on the reverse.

I suppose it's an okay price. What do you need them for? You can probably get 1967 ones (same design) for a quarter or so (less in bulk) when you can find them.

In general, antique shops are rather expensive places to get coins (usually overpriced)

I agree with this reply. But, having said that, if they were beauties, I would have likely bought them.

I would have kept the few best and given/traded/sold the others away.

Actually my experience has been that antique shop sellers are universally ignorant about coins, and therefore almost always misprice them, but on rare occasions their ignorance works in your favor if you know what you are looking at.

Yes, in general. In one antique mall in my area, there is a stall with plenty of coins, mostly priced perfectly at 3x catalogue/trends.

What do I need them for? I don't really need anything. I mostly collect Morgan dollars. I'm always trying to expand my collection and am trying to add a little variety. I guess I don't want my kids to be bored with Lady Liberty when I kick off.

I liked the look of the coins, but am not starting a British collection. Just looking at some non-US coins. My first thought was to buy them, keep a couple of the best, and sell the rest (to buy more Morgans). I had no idea of the value.

I have had tremendous luck in antique shops. Maybe it's the area. There are no coin shops nearby. These antique shops are consignment run. The stuff is tagged and dropped off. I've picked up some very rare Morgan VAMs and a bunch of other stuff. I agree their knowledge of pricing isn't always the best. They had a 2005 spiral bound US Red Book for $20 and a worn 1943-P Mercury dime for $5. They were next to a 1 oz Buffalo silver round for $6 and an 1878 8TF Morgan for $10.
