1959 silver penny

    a friend of mine showed me his penny at first it looked like an old steal penny that had been shot from the back BUT
    looking at the face you can see a small crest that looks like a star with wings on bouth sides of the star and a sword under it all this is all right under his face the date is 1959 does any one know more about this penny i am trying to get scans of the penny maybe the next day or so thanks for any help

  3. Hi floirdatinman, welcome to CT! Hm, we'll need to see a picture of it to know what you're talking about. Steel pennies were minted entirely in 1943 (with the exception of a dozen or two in 1944). You can add it to certain chemicals to make it look steel. The small crest you speak of sounds like a counterstamp. A copper cent weighs 3.11 grams, and a steel penny would weigh in at 2.7 grams.

    What you are describing sounds like a Shriner counter stamp.

    i do thank you for the help
    myself i am not into coins that much but after getting a familys collt-- after he pasted away
    i am into currency and have alot but do like getting coins to go with some of the notes i do have like right now working on a set for my 1896 1 dollar silver note
    and looking for a better half dollar for my 1899 set but soon i will be working on a set for my 1923 notes i have a red and blue 1 dollar notes
    but again i did want to thank you for your help
