My son has found a 1959 penney that has what appears to be the shape of the state of new york and the letters "ny" stamped on the front to the right of the head at approximately the 2:00 position. Any information available about this?

It's a private post-mint addition to the coin.

While Jackeen already answered your question, I need to tell you-"Welcome to the forum"

These coins are found more often than you may think. I think that it is pretty neat to find such a coin in circulation. 1959 is the earliest I have heard of this being done, but any coin could be a candidate.

I actually have found many of these states... I guess the goal is to collect all 50??

One of them has a JFK stamp - which I recall in the 70s-80s was sold as a novelty comparing the assassinations of JFK and Lincoln.

The most interesting stamp I've found is the Mason symbol stamped on a 1985 penny.
