I see two D's in the mint mark, but I think I see more. Keep in mind my eyes are not what they used to be. Feedback welcome. Regards, Mike L.
I'm not an expert, but I believe it could be a DD. It is not exactly identical to other pictures of the 1959 d DD I've seen, but then, it would seem logical to expect variances among the varieties.
That is a very nice RPM. One of the better ones I have seen. Why is the value so low on coppercoins? Do RPM's just not carry that much of a premium. I know if I picked that up for around $5, I would feel like I stole it. Nice one!
When I look at this: http://conecaonline.org/image/1959DRPM001b2.JPG I do not see the same image inside the D that your coin has. Your coin looks like there may be a rotated counterclockwise MM in the center. I definitely see the two D's but think yours does not match the 01 images I have been able to find on the net. Your 3rd and 4th image show what I am talking about the best. Regardless of the variety, very nice find.
Check out this link for RPM 1. Looks like a match to me. http://coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1959&die_id=1959d1mm001&die_state=mds
The attached photo is edited to show what I mean. What is in red does not show up (at least clearly) in the coppercoins example or others like the coneca example. I cannot tell from the photos if what is in yellow is related to the MM or just die marks. Whats in the center marked in red though look very similar to other RPMS that have rotated D's. Just my opinion.
With your link though he may be able to look at the other markers to say one way or the other. Hopefully the wear on the coin has not worn any markers away.
I think the red part you showed (the line in the mintmark) isn't evidence of an RPM, rather I think it is damage. It doesn't really match up to any specific park of the mintmark. But that's just been my experience. Hopefully the OP will be able to match markers up and confirm it as RPM 001 or perhaps a different one as well.
The most valuable tool a variety collector has is markers! There are some very good ones listed in the CONECA Master listings for the 59D RPM-001. There are a few photos of some markers on Copper Coins as well. http://www.varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/lincoln rpms 1958-1959.htm#_1959-D Check out Stage F Larry Nienaber
