Picked this up at one of my club auctions tonight. After studying it closer with a loupe I notice some doubling on the date and only the date. Thoughts? Anyone ever seen doubling on this year before? Anyone ever seen doubling on the date only? Thanks for your input.
I can't tell what it is from that image, but it isn't a doubled die. If anything, it would have to be an RPD since the date was punched into the die separately until about 1990. Chris
The correct term is Doubled Die not Double Quote - "Note that the proper terminology for this occurrence includes the letter 'd' at the end of the first word, hence "doubled die". The term "double die" without the first word ending in 'd' is not proper numismatic terminology." closed quote https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doubled_die
Yes, I've definitely seen doubling that was only visible on the date. However, there are no DDOs listed for 1958D. I don't see the doubling in your pictures, but I would strongly suspect that it is machine doubling and not true hub doubling. I have never seen an RPD on a Franklin. Not saying that they couldn't exist, but I've never seen one. Sometimes, words matter. This isn't one of them. I know this is a pet peeve of yours. But really, it makes zero difference. Doubled and Double die are both common parlance. This ranks right up there with the people who make a big deal of cent vs. penny.
I will declare my DD statement until the day I am caput I might even have my statement of the Doubled Die etched on my tombstone!
