In the center of the reverse side, it appears as if the very center of the coin was swirled. Can someone please explain to me how this could happen?

It is damage and did not happen at the Mint. Someone pressed something into the coin and twisted it.

What could possible twist the coin without there being damage to the obverse or the rim, because if something had enough force to twist it like this, it had to have been firmly held in place or the coin would have simply spun free

I wasn't there but perhaps someone held the coin in their hand and pressed it into the end of a rotating shaft. The rotating shaft could be part of a fan, an engine, a bench grinder, a weed eater, etc., etc.

Could be a dull drill bit.

Possibly marks made from a car hop's change counter.
