Looks like a doubled die to me, but I welcome any opinions/determinations from the community. Side by side comparison with a healthy, non doubled specimen in pics. What does everybody think?
You'll observe as you get more experience every coin is unique. That 7 on the right was plugged with crap and that's why it took that dull strike. Debris, grease, dust, virtually any number of things were in that hollow digit on the die, resulting in that impression.
Looks to me like it took a hit on the date, but I'm no expert! Just looks like it was flattened out! Wait for someone more knowledgeable than me! LOL
For training's sake, why does it appear like doubling lines on the 9 and the 7? I can take a more zoomed in picture if necessary of course, I'm here for the knowledge much moreso than the value.
What you are seeing is a coin that has seen much wear and dings. The more wear a coin has been subjected to will result in a flattened state. Worn dies also contribute to this condition and after serious wear your coin may be the result. Is it a DDO, no. None of the characteristics are evident on this coin.
So what are the characteristics i should be looking for then? That's the knowledge I need. I've studied the diagrams and stuff but I'm missing something and I don't know what it is.
http://doubleddie.com/58222.html Look for the Worthless Doubling section on the left menu.. That is one reason I don't search for doubled die varieties. I can drive people insane!
And for everyone - smooshiness is a valid term here on CT. I believe it was sanctioned by @paddyman98 himself quite some time back.
This is what I do when confronted with a suspected DDO/DDR. I check Variety Vista and or Wexler's to determine if any of the referenced coins have similar characteristics. Invariably, my coin does not meet the criteria. My suggestion is to consult these references and get a better understanding of what a doubled die obverse or reverse looks like. If you spend the time on the sites, you will be able to quickly eliminate coins which do not meet the criteria. Wikipedia has a good read on what DD is and another on how they are created.
I will keep studying. Maybe I'll hit a breakthrough eventually, I'm missing something and I haven't fogured out what it is yet.
The reason(s) the two coins in your photo appear different can be attributable to a multiple of factors. The left coin shows less wear which is attributable to less handling. Note the bottom left of the "5" has an elongated end caused by a hit which pushed metal. The numbers and MM show much less wear. The coin on the right shows flattened numbers, significantly more wear and hits which make the "1", "9" & "7" appear to have been doubled. Hits to these two numbers have been worn through handling. I checked all the VV listings and found none that matched yours. The other legends on your coin show no attributes of doubling. I offer this as my opinion of the coin you show here.
This is EXACTLY the type of response I'm looking for, thank you. That helps my understanding a lot, I appreciate you taking the time to type that out.
