The cent is red and shiny like new. The "Foot" of the L in liberty is missing, and the bottom of the B is filled in. My now "Ex" coin guy only cares about precious metal content and doesn't care about the cool stuff. Any thoughts?

Pics would help us out, but sounds like die wear on the L and a die chip in the B.

Welcome, you will come across many  coins, that your " coin guy " has ne o interest in.
You need to remember, that this is how he feeds his family, pays his bills, etc.
Having said that, you should collect what YOU like, not what someone tells you to like !!

Actually it was, sorry but he probably did not want the coin. He most likely has more in stock than he will sell any time soon. A dealer can not pay you book price, and remain in business.

CM, please continue to collect the coins YOU like !!
As your collection grows, I hope you come to appreciate the history of your coins, as well.
I have learned a lot here at Coin Talk, and i'm sure you will too.
    Happy collecting!! :)
