Anyone ever hear of a 1957-D Triple Die Obverse Franklin Half? I am sure that the date on mine is not a result of strike tripling as the top serif of the five is clearly split, almost looking like a serpent's tongue. The portrait is a bit confusing to me though and appears more doubled than tripled. I am also not sure if the portrait is a result of Strike Doubling. Also, In God We Trust there appears to be tripling. Not sure if it is a result of the strike or die though. Are there any resources that are more in depth than the Cherry Pickers Guide?
If you could show us pictures, I could help a bit more. More than likely, what you have is in fact Strike Doubling - it can often be very deceptive. There are no Double or Triple dies listed in the Coneca files for 1957D. That doesn't mean they don't exist - just no one has discovered/reported them yet. You can find the list here: http://www.conecaonline.org/content/franklindoubleddies19571963.html
No I haven't heard of such. Here is a general reference on the franklin half. Might help. http://www.stellacoinnews.com/index.php/reference-books/the-complete-guide-to-franklin-half-dollars/ Jim Yes, photos would help.
Yeah I am working on getting a camera at the moment. I am going to take it by the coin shop today along with my Peace dollar to see what info they may have.
Jason, aka physics-fan3.14, has a wonderful NGC Registry Set of Franklins. If you can, you should check out the "Poe Collection". This is about the best I can do for you...........
Thanks for your help everyone. The good news is that it is not strike doubling. The bad news is that it is not a double die either. Instead it is the result of the coin hooking onto the die as it is being ejected. Go figure.
