Hello all, Love reading over errors on coins and saw a post by 'fineone' in which they had a picture of a Lincoln with and 'error'. As was related to them from 'paddyman 98' it was a 'die break' or 'chip'. So here I will post two of my Lincolns'. I will say that this is the same issue with these and I believe this is a 'die break'. Thanks for your expertise. DSC08007 (3).JPG DSC08005 (3).JPG

Chips. Those areas in the die just chipped off. We have the '57 you're showing, not the '58.

Are those a wanted collectable, or do most "serious" collected pass them by. I'm still trying to figure this out.

They're very common, Ellen. We keep them. A lot of collectors do. They're just damage to the die from all the heavy pounding. They're collectable because they're repeatable; that's to say, until the die is pulled. If they're cool, yes, they could command a little extra.

Some of the old-timers will call the 1958 a "plugged 8".

    Hello EllenMWJ :D
You have 2 really great examples of "Die Chips". Just as the other members have stated, these are fairly common. They are found a lot in Cents minted in the 50's and 60's. There are "plugged 8 and 9" digits. You might have seen some other recent threads related to these Cents concerning the "BIE" Die Breaks.. That means a break between the letters B and E in LIBERTY. Here is an example of one that I own. These "Chips" were my actual first kind of errors that I ever found. That label was written when I was about 19 years old. I'm 44 now and have found scores of Die Breaks, Chips and BIE's.

Oh, ok! What about roundish blobs not near lettering or numbers? Are they die breaks too? Collectable? I had one of those, and now it has disappeared! These pictures and your expirations help so much. I'm new on here and I'll have to browse around. I don't want to get people's posts off track. Thanks, again!
