?

Can someone tell me if this is a plating error, or just a penny that was damaged in some other way?

How about a full size photo both sides. Wheat cents weren't plated.
    Looks like corrosion.

Hi and welcome to CT. Cents of 1958 were not plated. They were of a bronze alloy. From the photo it looks to have an adhesive residue. So the bit that was glued to a surface wasn´t subject to atmospheric toning like the rest of the surface.

I agree with the glue/tape theory and whatever in the adhesive removed the finish/oxide.

Yep. That is 100% glue residue.. Wasn't uncommon to glue those old cents into Whitman's back in the day. The Whitman's didn't like holding the coins very securely.

Phil.. you also named your file "Clad Layer"
Copper Cents were neither clad nor plated as mentioned by the other members.

I see there’s no way to change our vote. I just voted for #2. Looking it over real good, I want to change to #1.
