Why is it that I can buy a 1956 Proof Set, for the same price as a 2009 Silver proof set? Or a 1999 Silver Proof set vs a 1952 proof Set? This just doesn't add up to me...
    Opinions?

Because you can? That's the smart alec short answer. If you can pick up a '52 set for the same price as a '99 silver I'd say jump on it....."99's way overpriced. Prices on these sets will fall in time.

Check those against a 2000 or 2003 Silver Proof set - you'll probably be more confused.

The 2009 sets are high right now because of market hype and excitement. Typcially the prices fall in a short time. The '99 set is high for a couple of reasons. 1 - becaise it was the first year of the SQ series. 2 - because dealers thought the SQ series would be flop, so they didn't buy the '99 sets in bulk.

Then in the following year or two, when it became clear that the SQ series was not a flop and the public was enamored with it, the prices for those '99 sets began to climb. Dealers had to pay more because they had to buy them from John Q. Public.

Then when the rest of the public saw what dealers were paying, and consequently selling those '99 sets for - prices climbed even more. Hype took over, speculators stepped in, and prices climbed even more.

They have dropped some from what they once were, they will probably drop more because the mintage numbers are little different than any of the other sets. And eventually equlibrium will be re-established. Once that happens, what you questioned will no longer be the case.

I think the 1956 should be higher but thats just me because thats the year I was born. Wish someone would have bought a bunch of them for me back then for $2.10.
