Now that I have a new "toy" I've been able to get some good close up shots of this penny. This penny has been in this 2x2 since the early 60's at the latest when my dad was in high school. An earlier post I made which included this among many other coins suggested that this was just damage. Now that I'm able to get real close ups, I'm curious what everyone thinks. Is this likely to be a legitimate mint error or done in an effort to "fake" a mint error? I have a hard time thinking that someone would go to the effort of faking an error on a coin that was relatively young in the 60's, but hey, who knows. It does have a $10 price written on the back of the 2x2, so maybe that was enough money then to make the effort worth it? Either way, I don't get the "double rim" designation. If anything it seems like a missing rim or flattened rim... If this is a fake job, I'm curious how this may have been done since it seems pretty clean. Vise?
Is that what is called "ridge ring" (?) by the date and in the last photo at the bottom of the reverse
yeah, I took it out of the 2x2 and got a couple more that are better(I think). Seems like this would be pretty obscene die deterioration. The mark above the "W" is interesting... Whatever the case this is obviously well worn and circulated...
Looks like your Cent was previously in a coin bezel. It damaged the rim. That is not a rare error. IMHO Or it could even still have the bezel around it. That's the break of the bezel above the W.
Thanks, after some searching on encased cent holder, this seems to be a very common thing people "find" and want to know about... Some shockingly similar photos to mine out there...
