Back again with a fascinating 1955 Wheat Cent with errors. Hello to all......well here it goes..... ...I found this coin with other errors in a bag of Wheats that I just bought at an auction. Paid under $ 20 for all the coins. This is a 1955 wheat cent that has been widened out from side to side.On Obverse side it has Liberty struck more than 8-10 times at least above normal position and below normal position.( all raised details ) Motto , Lincolns Head ,is doubled & tripled from being rotated or shifted. It appears to have rotated from a single point..more error to the left side on Obverse than right side and the same on reverse side. Reverse side shows an s in the center of wheat on the right side from States..Appears to have some raised features resembling letters like above the date?? more noticable in diff angles & light. Also appears to have a S mint mark between the 9 & 5 .Remnants of other 5's visable & portions of #'s. You can see collar marks or rim marks across coin. Liberty also covers over portions of Lincolns back. You really see different features with turning coin and light variations from getting close-ups. I do NOT try cleaning any coins or do anything to them..I take the pics in as found condition. As all should be. This coin has some fine black flake that looks to have covered the shiny portion on reverse and has come off from being in the bag..My thoughts??? Is it some kind of test coin ?...with true raised features...how could it be possible to have so many strikes ? never have I seen so many on one coin. Just have to see what else the bag has in store ...open to any suggestions to this one? thank you kindly for your time.
From what I understand this type coin is either struck in between leather sheets or with other coins on top of it with a hammer or vise. I have found these before and that's what I've been told.
I tried to make the picture bigger, but couldn't. It kind of looks like multiple strikes, but I can't tell. The liberty looks right from a distance. Need close-ups if possible, and Mike d's opinion also.
I wouldn't get your hopes up on this little puppy. I on the other hand would prefer not to ever see it cause I've seen enough of them. Just IMO only-it's worth what you paid for it.
1955 LC error close ups I have close ups..they just don't come through as large when uploaded...??Maybe these will be diff..
Just curious, assuming it was placed between sheets and beaten to death, how do they get the letterng to face in the correct direction?
I would have to say that most of you are assuming that this was done intentionally ???I know you've been around and seen all sorts..How does ONE get all the raised edges on everything ? You can clearly see where it passes over each other and has the extra thickness & is an add to..not taken or resessed in. It's really boggles my mind.
After seeing the better pics, My Humble opinion is that it was struck 3 times. I don't know of a way to do this outside of the mint.
I'm in the process of uploading link to photobucket in my comment section in album to view images much easier. I hope that's acceptable ? kindly let me know if it's not?
Gotta close up of the date? If everything else is tripled or whatever it is, the date should look the same...
Here is another of date...going to be getting all pics uploaded to Photobucket within the hour. The right side date side is not effected much...as with reverse of coin...has hardly no doubling....although..the right Wheat stalk has an S struck into it ..appears to be from States ??
I've got a similar 1955 and was told it was struck with fake die's or something like that. The last number is die deterioration doubling.
Here's what I think...we are all gonna say this or that...then Conder is gonna look at it for 2 seconds and nail it....
Maybe someone pressed a cent into soft metal, then squeezed this cent into the 'die?' We need more opinions on this one.
I thought the only way you got raised details like that was through multiple strikes? If it had been squeezed in a vice shouldn't the lettering be incuse?
So the fake Die approach makes sense ??....it's no good ??should it be a canidate for those elongated penny presses that will sqeeze me out the statue of Liberty ? at least they hold a value of .25 cents.......Fake Dies a little outta my league. Guess back to the penny bag.
Hold on, Mike Diamond , president of Coneca, hangs out here and may comment soon, I'd wait for his opinion before tossing this one.
