My dad used to tell me that when the 1955 Wheat cent came out that there were a few of those pennies that were a triple die error and I was wondering if a 1955 Wheat cent triple die actually exist or is it just a tall tale.

Depends on what you would classify as a tripled die coin. For 1955 (and other dates), there are coins that have additional hubbings, such as this 1955 tripled eyelid, that could technically be called a "tripled die", but nothing on the scale of the original 1955 DDO has been found.

But I have seen a fake one with 3 widely separated obverse images many years ago. Maybe that is where some have heard of it. If your dad collected coins maybe he heard about those. There were a significant number of fake 55/55 and I guess someone decided if double was good, 3 would be better.
