I have a 1955 wheat penny that I can't explain!!! It is almost like the very edge of the coin on the rim was double stamped It has a very ruff feeling to it The coin looks to have some silver or grey coloring coming thru the copper I hope some one can explain this for me
It looks to me like a cent that has been removed from an encasement. To make an encased cent the cent would be placed in a hole in the aluminum planchet which would then be struck by dies to impress the design and compres the aluminum around the edge of the cent. Often the dies would strike and flatten the rims of the cent. If the coin was later forced out of the aluminum it would frequently have the "double rim" appearance of your coin.
I am not sure I fully understand what you mean. Was this done at the mint? If so why? Is it worth anything?
Oh,i see Conder. Do you mean like the old "good luck" horseshoes or the "keep me and never go broke" holders from the 50's and 60's ?
