the obverse shows pitting on the left behind the head ... the reverse shows some as well, im not sure if that would impact the grade or not....

does the reverse show doubling on the rim lettering ... Half Dollar" looks weird... maybe justthe lighting ...

Yes, I saw that too. I suspect it's machine doubling, except look at the AME(R)ICA there is a definate cud on it and a couple of small ones on the front between the T and Y.

With the wear on the reverse I'd say xf as well.

I'd say XF40. It just doesnt make it as AU in my opinion.

Wasn't it 1956 when they went to the newer/better detailed reverse?

    Thanks for the information. :)

I would call it slider AU and there looks to be some machine doubling.

    From Mike Locke's site -

1948-1959 Franklin, type 1 eagle (4 feathers to left of perch)
Type 2 eagles appear on proofs from 1956 to 1963. A very few business
strikes also appear with the type 2 eagle, from 1958 and 1959. See
    notes under silver Washington quarters.

    -1960-1963, type 1 eagle
It appears that the obverse hub slowly deteriorated until 1959, at which
time a new hub was created. Besides the restoration of detail, the hub
of 1960 cannot easily be distinguished from the hub of 1948. On the
sharpest, earliest coins, Franklins's hair shows details throughout,
    with no "bald" areas.

What does that mean? Did they use one master until they reengraved it in 1960?

I'd say an XF at first blush. That's without even looking at photograde.

man, I gotta get better at this...

Love those toned Franklins and that's nicely toned. Sent 2 1955's off the NGC in that last batch. One ms64 FBL and the other ms65 fbl. Hopefully have them back in the mail tomorrow with the screwed up labeled 1963 quarter.

Yes, but they didn't re-engrave it, they made a new one from scratch.
